Evgeny Romanovich Ustyugov (Russian: Евгений Романович Устюгов, born June 4, 1985 in Krasnoyarsk) is a Russian biathlete. He won the gold medal in the men's 15km mass start event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to the 2010 Games, his best World Championship finish in an individual event was 20th place.
Ustyugov began competing internationally in 2005, at the World Junior Championships, and won first place in both the individual and pursuit events at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Maine. He began competing in adult-level international events soon after. His first top ten finishes at World Cup events came during the 2008/2009 season, and in the following season he won his first world cup races at Pokljuka and Oberhof in December, 2009. Prior to the 2010 Olympics, his best individual finish at a World Championship was 20th place, in 2009, although his team finished in that top ten that year in the relay event.[1]
At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, he became the Olympic champion in the men's 15km mass start event. After the first shooting range, Ustyogov was ranked 13th, but worked his way up through the field over the remainder of the race, taking the lead in the final portion of the race. He beat his closest competitors, Martin Fourcade of France and Pavol Hurajt of Slovakia by more than ten seconds, with a perfect performance in the shooting portion of the event.[2] His victory upset Norwegian hopes for a twelfth Olympic medal for Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, and Ustyugov became the first Russian man to win a biathlon gold since the 1994 Winter Olympics.[3]
Ustyugov has a degree in environmental engineering from the Siberian State Technological University in his hometown of Krasnoyarsk.[4]
